Homeopathy is a safe and effective system of medicine that works
by stimulating the natural tendency of the body to heal itself; leading to improved physical and emotional health and a greater
sense of well-being.
Homeopathy recognises
that all symptoms of ill health are an expression of disorder within the whole person and hence treatment is focused on the
individual, taking into account any and all of the ways in which someone may feel out of balance or unwell. As such,
there is scope within homeopathy through the harnessing of the body's own healing capacity to improve the general
health of people with all kinds of illnesses; from short term acute conditions, such as tonsillitis, ear infections,
flu, etc. to more long term chronic conditions. An audit of my practice for the last year shows that people have come
to see me having been diagnosed with the following conditions by their GP:
Anxieties, fears and phobias | Menstrual disturbances, such as period pain, heavy bleeding, etc.
|
Depression | Menopausal symptoms, such as hot flushes, anxiety and loss of libido
|
Sleep problems, such as insomnia or disturbed sleep
| Asthma and allergies |
Fatigue
| Skin eruptions, such as eczema
|
Muscle and joint pain | Headaches and migraines
|
Digestive disorders, such as chronic constipation or diarrhoea, colic, heartburn and
wind
|
Recurrent infections
|
Homeopaths do not claim to cure any named disease or condition because
it doesn't work that way. The focus of treatment is on you not your illness; understanding how, when and where things
have gone wrong and enabling you to get back on the right path and ultimately the road to recovery. Every case is treated
individually because we are all different, and remedies are prescribed in accordance with the understanding we achieve together
during the consulation of what needs to change to enable you to heal.
What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy
was formulated into a working system of medicine over 200 years ago by a German physician called Samuel Hahnemann. Like
Hippocrates two thousand years earlier, he realised that there were two ways of treating ill health, the way of opposites
and the way of similars. Through extensive research, he came to the conclusion that the only real way of promoting
"rapid, gentle and permanent restoration of health" was through the use of medicines prescribed according to the
Law of similars.
As an example, let's
imagine you were suffering from insomnia. The way of opposites is to treat this by giving you a drug to bring on artificial
sleep. This frequently involves the use of large or regular doses of drugs which can sometimes cause side effects.
This is the approach that conventional medicine uses. In contrast, if we were to treat you according to the way of similars,
minute doses of a substance that can cause sleeplessness in large quantities, such as coffee, would be prescribed to enable
you to sleep naturally.
This is one example of a homeopathic prescription. Homeopathic remedies can be applied in a multitude of cases
and are made from a wide variety of natural substances that have been tested rigorously to determine their action on the human
body. When prescribed by a professional homeopath according to your needs, they act as a stimulus to your
body's own self-healing mechanisms, thus enabling you to overcome your illness. Not only are homeopathic remedies
highly diluted so as not to overwhelm your body, they are also prescribed infrequently or for short periods of time, and so
are not addictive or habit forming.
Although homeopathy is used as an alternative to conventional treatment, it can also be used as a complementary therapy
due to the fact that homeopathic remedies do not interfere with the action of conventional drugs, giving you the option of
using both treatments. Homeopathic remedies can also be used to reduce dependence on over-the-counter medicines.
